It is with extraordinary sadness that the family of Thomas Dane is mourning his loss. Tom died suddenly at his farm in Tennessee on April 26, 2018 after a brief battle with cancer, a battle he never knew he was fighting until it was too late.
Born July 25, 1948, Tom was a native New York City boy, and despite living in Sarasota, FL for 15 years and Lafayette, TN for two, he was a New Yorker to the end. The son of the late Robert (Brigham) Dane and Emma Elizabeth Dane, he served his county proudly during the Vietnam War. A Marine to the Corps (pun intended), he received a Naval Commendation for Bravery for saving the lives of fellow Marines who were trapped in a burning AmTrac, and Purple Heart for wounds sustained during that heroic event.
Tom was loved and respected by everyone who met him. He spent many years as a retail manager for a toy company and then for a family-owned building center in Westchester County, where he realized that his real mission was to help people enjoy their homes and he embarked on a 25-year career as a kitchen designer and remodeler. His clients considered him a family member and not a contractor, and many remained his friends for years.
Tom loved all things in nature. He loved to scuba dive and explore the wonders of the ocean as much as he loved the mountains, spending weeks on end in the Grand Tetons and Yellowstone. He passed on his love of the mountains and camping to his children. He never considered life complete without a bare minimum of two dogs in the house, and for the past ten years he spent joyous hours with his horse, Lakota. He was a kind and gentle man, and he will be sorely missed.
He leaves behind his adoring and loving wife Elizabeth (Betsy) with whom he spent the past forty years laughing, enjoying adventures and setting an example for those who knew them of what a devoted relationship means. He is also mourned by his beloved daughters Alexandra Sydney Dane Paul and Emma Katerina Dane, son-in-law Matthew Aaron Paul, brand new grandson Wesley William Paul and brother Robert Dane as well as countless friends and other cousins, nieces and family members.
A Celebration of Life for Tom will be announced at a later date. In lieu of flowers, his wish was that donations be made to St. Jude Childrens Research Hospital to continue the fight to help children affected by the scourge called cancer.
